Following
swiftly on from their critically acclaimed and continuing collaboration
with Michael Nyman, Hazuan Hashim and
Phil Maxwell have collaborated with Lola Perrin
on a 7 minute film shot in a few hours in Barcelona in 2005.
Following its successful world premier in Berlin in January
the piece, composed for 6 pianos, receives its UK premier at
the South Bank Purcell Room in April.
Unusually, the film consists of thousands of stills shot by
Phil Maxwell woven into an intricate pattern by Hazuan Hashim
to compliment Lola’s amazing composition. Street life,
graffiti, old and new architecture are poured out of the screen
with a rhythm that anticipates and provokes the urgent movement
of a minimalist team of excited pianos. Beginning in the street
and ending in the clouds, this is a piece intended to blur the
boundaries between still and moving photography.
Lola Perrin has made a huge impact across Europe; she plays
with stunning film projections, some created by the Gray Circle
(who designed the visuals for Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials
at the National Theatre), others inspired by Edward Hopper's
paintings. This is her first South Bank Centre concert and it
marks the release of her album Fragile Light.
